One of the questions that arises most sharply in this period is the issue of the division of power between secular authority and sacred authority. While ancient religion tended very largely to be driven by and through the state, in Christianity especially the new notion of Church and State as complementary or largely separate entities emerged.

• How did this play out?
• When did the State exert influence on the Church?
• When did the Church exert influence on the State?
• How do we see centers of power shift toward the end of this period?
• Where do we see resistance to power?
