This first chapter discusses the development of hominids based on physical evidence during the Paleolithic period. Three major groups of hominids are identified: Australopithecus, homo erectus, and homo sapiens.

• What physical resources in the environment are available to each group?
• How do changing environment resources affect human migrations?
• What physical characteristics exist in each group?
• How do these characteristics differ among the groups discussed in your text?
• How do these characteristics act as resources in the actions assumed for each type of hominid? (e.g., what activities do the characteristics make possible?)
• What limits some groups to foraging methods long after others begin to develop agriculture?
