Chapter 11: Innovation and Adaptation in the Western Christian World

Please in the forum for the day a short essay in response to this question:

In the millennium following the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, a number of new communities, and new kinds of communities--political, religious, economic, social, and academic--form throughout Europe. How did they transform society and the way people saw themselves in respect to each other? You may want to consider in particular:

• The diocese was an old Roman administrative unit. What became of it?
• The monasteries have an enormous effect on the intellectual development of Europe, and also on its social dynamics (especially as they were communities that did not, by definition, produce children). What are some of these effects?
• What new institutions arise in this period? How do they grow out of their communities, and how do they shape communities in turn?
