Please post in the forum for the day a short essay in response to this question:

We've looked at the growth and development of tribes, kingdoms, and empires in Eurasia, India, China, and South America. How was the growth and development of communities different in Africa? What factors promoted or limited the development and maintenance of larger, stable communities in sub-Saharan Africa (including the southern Nile Valley)?

Consider in particular:

• Lack or use of a common spoken language across Africa
• Lack or use of a common written language across Africa
• Unifying and divisive or isolating forces arising from adherence to a particular religion
• Geographic barriers to government’s ability to administer large regions
• Tribal organization
