Unit 4: Interactions Across the Globe

Chapter 19: African Kingdoms, The African Slave Trade, and the Origins of Black America

15: Wed, Oct 23, 2024

Please post in the forum for the day a short essay in response to this question:

In the period between 1550 and 1888 (when Brazil abolished slavery), an estimated 12.5 million people were forcibly removed from Africa and transported to the Americas. Consider how this affected both the communities the slaves left, and those they formed in the Americas.

See the comments on page 469 about "creolization." We saw earlier the term “creole” to mean people of Spanish origin born in the New World. Here, however, the term refers to the blending of different cultures to form a new one. One example is the development of new religious movements like those described at the top of pages 468-469. Why do you think such movements were attractive for slaves?

How do food and music shape communities? Think about family customs you may have. Do you have any traditions for special celebrations that involve food or music?
