This period should be somewhat familiar from other courses you have taken, as well as from literature, movies, and music. Bringing to bear what you learned from the text, what you already know, and what you might be inspired to research on your own, prepare and submit some notes for the following discussion questions. Along with your notes, include any questions that you hope to discuss in class.

• What are some examples of power destabilization caused by European colonists, and what new power structures replaced the old?
• What different kinds of power do you see being exercised in these transitions?
• Where do you see similarities or differences from other examples of conquest or colonization we've seen previously?

You may want to consider:

• How physical distance from the motherland affects the administration of colonies in North and in South America
• Old and new social strata
• Different concepts and implementations of 'property', 'authority', and 'legitimate power' within Catholic, Protestant, and indigenous traditions
• Opportunities for consolidating power and limits to consolidating power
• Where laws succeed and where they fail
