Chapter 16: Western Christian Overseas Expansion and the Ottoman-Habsburg Struggle

Please read the discussion of power. We will go over it briefly in class. Most will probably remember it from last year.

Bearing in mind the resources and the communities we've already discussed as well as our definitions of power, prepare and submit some notes for the following discussion questions on power in the history of the Ottoman and Habsburg empires through 1650:

Choose any three of the philosophers listed, and compare their views on the nature of political power, its source, and the best way to control it:

• How did new weapons like guns and cannons and the military communities that used them fit into existing power structures?
• How did the Ottoman and the Habsburg rulers consolidate power within their own states? Where did they meet with resistance?
• How did the Ottoman-Habsburg struggle present challenges or opportunities for neighboring states?
• How did urbanization, the money economy, and the consolidation of wealth change, represent, or express types of power?

Along with your notes, be sure to include any questions that you have.
