Chapter 16: Western Christian Overseas Expansion and the Ottoman-Habsburg Struggle

Please read the discussion of the individual and community. We will go over it briefly in class; most will probably remember it from last year.

Bringing to bear what you learned from the text, what you already know, and what you might be inspired to research on your own, examine the communities you see in the history of the Ottoman and Hapsburg empires before 1650, and submit your notes on the following questions.

Where do you find conflict arising along political, religious, or social divides? Where do you see boundaries between communities or identities being crossed or challenged? Where and how do you see boundaries between communities being reasserted or enforced? How do different communities situate themselves in relation to the past or the future?

Your notes or questions may address:

• Leo Africanus
• The Ottoman harem
• Christian military orders
• The Safavids and the Hidden Twelfth Imam
• Janissaries in the Ottoman Empire and the devşirme in Anatolia and the Balkans
• The "Byzantine-Ottoman struggle" that came before the "Habsburg-Ottoman struggle"
• Ottoman universities
