Using the instructor's own short videos (hosted on YouTube), animations, weekly map assignments, and live chat discussions, Around the World in Nine Weeks introduces students to geography concepts and the major features of each of the continents and oceans, providing the geographic background necessary for history, literature, and science courses.

During this nine-week course we will cover

• how types of geography — physical, social, environment, regional — shape our views of the world.
• how to understand and create maps, charts, and tables to convey geographical information.
• how physical geography determines possible ecosystems and the resources that can support human populations.
• the key physical and human geographic features of each continent, including mountain ranges, deserts, rivers, countries, and cities.
• ocean and atmospheric currents and their effect on weather.
• the application of geographical information to history, literature, and science,
• and the spectacular waterfalls, soaring peaks, bustling cities, deep forests, and broad plains of six continents, not to mention the icy fastnesses of the seventh!

Prerequisite: None. While this course is designed for middle school students, anyone wishing better familiarity with our world and better map reading skills is welcome.

Required Texts:

No texts are required. We will rely extensively on available web resources, however, so a reliable internet connection is critical for both chat and preparation time.

Required Software:

Only a current version of one of the standard browsers is required. Exercises and projects will be hosted on the Scholars Online Moodle server.
