Week 6: A true definition of courage?
Questions for discussion:
- Socrates is looking for a true definition of courage (see page xxxvi for the distinction between true and nominal definitions). Is such a definition possible?
- What reality in the world would such a definition correspond to?
- How would we begin to explain courage, by example?
- Does courage include both acts and motives?
In the foregoing, consider these examples:
- Fred stands firm in battle because he wants to be promoted.
- Alex stands firm because he has been trained to fight with his unit.
- Mark attacks fearlessly because he is drunk and berserk.
- Martin attacks fearlessly because he is misinformed about the strength of the enemy.
