Below are notes on the main points of each assignment.

• History Web Lecture: From Alchemy to Chemistry.

  By the end of the Scientific Renaissance, Aristotle's concepts of five elements (earth, fire, water, air, and the quintessence) break down. This creates a challenge to chemists, who want to classify elements by common characteristics. There is not, in the early stages of modern chemistry, any agreement on what characteristics are most important in identifying and classifying elements.

  Please discuss with your student the study questions at the end of the web lecture.

• Science Web Lecture: Acids and Bases: Types of Reactions.

  The science lecture concentrates on very basic ideas of chemistry: atoms, how they combine to form molecules, how they recombine in chemical reactions, how they interact to form solids, liquids, or gases. Acids and bases are among the more common chemicals that have similar reactions, which helped chemists identify characteristics to look for in reactions. These become basic concepts for further progress in studying the nature of matter and how different types of matter interact with each other.

• Mastery Exercise: The exercise questions stress terminology used to describe objects in chemistry.
• Discussion: Our Chat discussion will concentrate on basic ideas introduced by the "new" chemistry: atoms, molecules.
