Unit 16: Reviewing Materials for an Exam
Preparation
- Homework: Students should begin reviewing all of the material covered so far for units 1-15. The homework and weblectures list all of the people we have studied this year, and give an outline example of one approach to organizing the scientific concepts with supporting explanation materials. Encourage your student to memorize the facts about the people using whatever method works best (making lists, timelines, flash cards), and to complete the science outline that is shown in the science weblecture.
- Discussion: We will talk about the kinds of questions we can ask about the nature of science and the scientific enterprise throughout human history. Most of these questions involve synthesizing information from different areas and historical events, and looking for patterns in methods and theories of those who try to explain natural phenomena, as well as in the acceptance of theories by different cultures and societies. Often this is a new kind of approach for many students; these questions don't necessarily have simple or unambiguous answers. Students need to learn how to answer the question asked, and then support their position by drawing on historical examples or theses from scientific theories.
