CERN Related Projects

Goal: To learn how CERN uses particle accelerators to discover subatomic particle properties.

Materials

Below are instructions for several different particle-related projects. The first two require electronic circuit skills and/or 3D model printers. However, the Applications page has several options for running analysis of real and simulated data from the colliders and detectors.

• Instructions Alpha Particle detector
• Instructions ATLAS Toroid Model
• CERN Atlas Applications and Open Data
  Recommended: Histogram analyzer. Follow the instructions to select transitions and remove unwanted processes so that you can focus on specific processes, then review the data your cuts generate.

Procedure

1. Identify your project, and describe any modifications or additional steps you took to collect data.
2. Record your data in an appropriate format.

Data Handling

1. Show how you analyzed your data to reach a conclusion (for example, to identify the strength and direction of the magnetic field of your ATLAS toroid),
