General course overview and outline of expectations

This course introduces students to some of the literature of the ancient and mediaeval worlds that couldn't be fit into the original Western Literature to Dante course. It is designed to be effectively a college-level course, and it is offered on occasion when exceptional students have expressed interest in it. It requires considerably more reading than the original Western Literature to Dante, and provides considerably less close supervision. It presupposes, furthermore, that the student is already familiar with the material in the first course, and so spends less time explaining some of the background. There are no exams; the grade for the course is determined by a final paper. It is perhaps ideal for students seriously looking at college study in classics.

Unlike the first course, it pays relatively little attention to the story of Troy, but goes into the Arthurian material at considerably greater depth.
