Week 23
Please read:
Thomas De Quincey, “On the Knocking at the Gate in Macbeth”, p. 485-489.
Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, sel., pp. 519-530.
“The Gothic Novel”, pp. 530-531.
You can find out more about the Gothic novel of the English Romantic at Wikipedia, and can find a range of related titles on this Project Gutenberg bookshelf.
Your choice:
- Frankenstein, complete.
- Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice.
N.B.: You will have to get one of these two novels from the library or a bookstore (if you don't own it already.) Both of them are available in a number of paperback editions, and should not be hard to find used, if you have a decent used book dealer in your neighborhood. If you need to buy one, but can't find it, let me know sufficiently in advance, and I will try some of my local resources here.
Optional extra reading:
Those who are intrigued by the intersection of the bizarre and over-wrought world of the Gothic with the orderly world of Jane Austen might enjoy looking at the latter's satirical parody of the Gothic novel, Northanger Abbey here at the Project Gutenberg site.
