Unit 42 Laboratory Activity: Recognizing Fossils
Goal: Identify fossils from list of characteristics
Equipment and Materials:
- Paper and pencil
- Browser and website: ==>https://paleobiodb.org/navigator/<==
Procedure
- In the browser, click the dot nearest to your home, then in subsequent maps, move in on your own location. You can scroll down or use the "+" symbol to zoom in.
- Chose the dot closest to you, and use the color code to determine the Geological period represented by the site. For example, the site nearest to Dr. Christe's location next to the I-90 freeway in Bellevue is from the Chattian Interval of the Cenozoic Paleogene Eocene period, is sandstone, and marine in nature.
- Clicking on the collection number; this lists the contents of the collection as recorded in the database. What kinds of animals or plants are listed. (e.g., UCMP A3708 includes bivalves and gastropods.)
- Identify the conditions likely when the fossil was a living organism. (e.g., UCMPA3708 was likely seafloor, since the fossils are shellfish.)
- Choose at least two locations on other continents that are in different eras. Identify the period of your location, the nature of soil in which the specimens were found, and the types of specimens. What can you say about the likely conditions at the time the specimens lived in this location?
