Chemistry

I am currently reviewing textbooks and editions for the 2010-2011 academic year. Please do not purchase a textbook for this course until this notice disappears!

For the 2008-2009 academic year, we will use Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity 6/e (John C. Kotz, Paul Treichel), which is an introductory college level chemistry text for science majors used in a number of high school AP programs. It has a well-supported publisher's website (select Chemistry and Reactivity Edition 6) that we will refer to for supplemental materials. Be sure that you purchase the SIXTH edition, with media (CD ROM). Earlier or later editions will not be acceptable; besides having different material in some of the chapters, most of the end-of-chapter exercises change for each edition.

We will also be using the accompanying CD ROM, which includes:

• Acrobat Reader (if you have already downloaded a later version, you will not need to install this one in order to read the book) to use in reading the textbook
• the interactive chemistry lectures, which include videos of demonstrations and labs, animations of models and text diagrams,
• CAChe Visualizer, a chemistry modeling program that I used to produce the diagram at the top of the page
• a graphing tool for use in analyzing data,
• molar mass and molarity calculators,
• chemical database and important tables.

We will have assignments from both the text and the CD-ROM.

Optional Supplemental Materials

In addition to the textbook itself, Saunders publishes a plethora of student aids including a full study guide, student solutions to some of the textbook exercises, and a pocket study guide, any of which you may find useful. Only the textbook and the Interactive Chemistry CD-ROM are required for the course.
