Scholars' Online Chemistry for 2008/2009
This course is an introduction to general chemistry. Lectures and text will cover basic concepts of matter, atomic structure and electron configurations, the nature of chemical bonds, and aspects of chemical reactions including acid-base reactions, precipitation reactions, simple solutions, chemical equilibria, and energy. Time permitting, we will also discuss some of the applications of basic chemistry to organic chemistry, biochemistry, and the characteristics of chemical families.
Class meets twice a week for a review of the material and open discussion. Assignments from the text and study guide will be supplemented by laboratory exercises. Students post homework problems to the course conference center to gain practice in explaining solutions. While this is not a formal Advanced Placement course, material will be covered in detail to prepare the interested student for the Advanced Placement Chemistry examination and SAT II Chemistry exam.
